General Information

Attendance

Attendance at Kingstree Senior High School is a privilege. Although the state of South Carolina has a compulsory school attendance law which guarantees an educational opportunity for its youth, admittance at and continued attendance in a public school are privileges dependent upon the student's compliance with the laws of the state of South Carolina, the policies of Williamsburg County School District and the rules and regulations of the school. Students shall be expected to attend school regularly and shall present a written excuse signed by a parent or physical guardian, or other appropriate person in all cases of absence.

Absence

Parents of all students must notify the school whenever it is necessary for a student to be absent, arrive late or be dismissed early during the school day. Calls may be made any time from 7:30 a.m. to 2:00 p.m. but preferably as early in the morning as possible. The phone number is 354-6525 ext. 223. The teacher takes class attendance each period and the names of the absentees are reported to the school office.

Excused Absences

Death in the student's immediate family
  Illness of student
  Doctor and dental observations
College visits for high school juniors and seniors
  School sponsored activities

Unexcused Absences

Absences for all other reasons are unexcused and shall be treated as truancy. Oversleeping, car/transportation problems, work, job interviews, baby-sitting, running errands for self or parents are not excused absences or tardies.

Make-Up Work

Students who have an unexcused absence or truancy will not be allowed to receive credit for schoolwork missed while the student was absent/truant. This does not apply to out-of-school or in-school suspension. When a student has an excused absence from school, it is the student's responsibility to contact his/her teachers to make arrangements for making up assignments or tests missed during the absence. Failure to do this may result in the student receiving an "F" for work not made up. Students will be granted time equal to the time they were absent in which to make up the work.

A student not in attendance for more than three or more periods during the school day may not participate in extra-curricular school activities for that day. A student who is under suspension from school may not attend or participate in school activities for that day. Students returning to school after a full day's absence are to report directly to their scheduled classes and need not stop at the office.

If a student is out due to illness, the student will receive an incomplete. The student has (10) days to make up work. If the work is not made up in the ten (10) days, the incomplete is removed and a numerical grade equivalent to "F" is given.

CONTINUOUS ATTENDANCE: Once a class has started, students are not to leave the room without permission from the teacher in charge. Students who walk out of a room while a class is in session without the consent of the teacher in charge are subject to disciplinary action.

EXCESSIVE ABSENTEEISM: Students who accumulate five (5) unexcused absences or a total of ten (10) absences (excused or a combination of excused/unexcused) in a class will lose credit for those classes. STUDENTS WHO ARE ENROLLED IN CLASSES FOR MORE THAN ONE PERIOD (i.e., electronics, cosmetology, building construction, and graphics communication) MUST BE PRESENT IN CLASS AT LEAST ¾ OF THE TIME IN ORDER TO BE COUNTED PRESENT. ATTENDANCE WILL BE TAKEN DURING THE LAST PERIOD THAT THE STUDENT IS IN THAT CLASS. Students will not be withdrawn from those classes unless there are resultant behavior problems. Extenuating circumstances of a medical nature (such as a serious or extended illness or injury), upon receipt of documentation from the doctor in charge will be considered. This documentation must contain a diagnosis of the illness and the specific dates that the student could not be in school. Details may be obtained from the student's counselor or grade administrator. Suspension imposed by the school administrator does not count as either an excused or unexcused absence in determining whether a student will lose credit in a class for excessive absenteeism.

STUDENT ACTIVITY FEE

Each year students are asked to pay a $15 class activity fee. This fee will provide funds for classroom instruction and the schools honors program. The student activity fee is nonrefundable.

EMERGENCY PROCEDURES

FIRE DRILLS: The signal used in the event of a fire or fire drill is a continuous sounding of the fire horn. At the sound of the signal, students should move quickly in an orderly manner out of the building according to the exit plan posted in each classroom. Windows and doors should be closed before the room is evacuated. Students should take all personal items with them and stand well clear of the building once outside. Students should not stand in the driveways.

TORNADO DRILLS: The signal used in the event of a tornado warning or some other emergency is three (3) consecutive short rings of the bell system, repeated several times. At the sound of the signal, students are to move single file to assigned areas. Students are to bring coats or wraps that can be used to cover/protect head. Students will sit on the floor with their knees drawn up and their hands over their heads between their knees.

EARTHQUAKE DRILLS:

During an earthquake or at first sign of ground shaking, students will demonstrate their ability to react immediately and appropriately:
Drop and Cover, Turn Away From Windows, Stay Under Shelter Until Shaking Stops, Listen for Instructions.
1) Immediately take cover under desks or tables, and turn away from windows, 2) Remain in sheltered position for at least 60 seconds, and 3) Be silent and listen to instructions.

LIBRARY/MEDIA CENTER

The Library Media Center is open from 7:30 a.m. until 3:30 p.m. each school day. Students are encouraged to use this excellent facility during these hours. Books in the general collection may be checked out for two (2) weeks. Reference books may not be checked out. Magazines may be checked out for an hour or overnight. Students using the library facilities are expected to follow the rules of the library and not distract others wishing to use the facility for study. Fees for overdue or lost books must be paid before the end of the semester. Students who do not pay fees/fines will be subject to loss of privileges as determined by the administrators.

Lockers

The high school owns and maintains hall lockers, which are available to 11th and 12th grade students ONLY on the West campus. Since the lockers are school property, the school reserves the right to joint control over the students' lockers, including the right to search the lockers without prior notice. The locker fee is $5.00, and students are to use only the locker assigned to them.

Lost and Found

A lost and found is maintained in the main office for articles of value such as wallets, rings, watches, keys, coats, etc. Books are returned to the issuing teacher and gym clothing is turned over to the physical education teachers.

Lunch Period

Kingstree Senior High School has one closed lunch break. Students are not allowed to leave school to eat lunch at stores or eating places around the school. If a student is caught doing this, he/she will be suspended. The cafeteria is a supervised area similar to a classroom. Students are expected to follow all standard rules of behavior during lunch, including attendance, and punctuality. All students are expected to eat lunch in the cafeteria each day. All food trays and trash are to be properly disposed of in the proper trash containers. Students caught leaving trays on the cafeteria tables will be subject to disciplinary action.

Messages

If messages are of an emergency nature, the office staff will make every effort to deliver them without delay. However, it is not possible to accept and hand deliver all of the telephone messages that come to the high school without interrupting classes and interfering with the learning environment the school faculty and staff work so hard to maintain. Students should ask friends and employers to leave messages at their home and not at their school.

Telephones

Students are allowed to use the phones in the main offices of both campuses. If a student must use the phone during class, he/she must have permission from the teacher prior to leaving class, and he/she must have a pass. Telephones are for emergency use only.

Health Room

A student who becomes ill or injured during the day should obtain a pass from his/her teacher (except in emergency) before going to the Health Room, located across from the main office. If the nurse or nurse 's assistant is not in the Health Room, the student should consult a secretary in the main office. A student who must make an emergency visit to a restroom because of illness should report to the Health Room before returning to class. Under no circumstances are students to leave the school without proper authorization from the nurse or administrator. It is very important that parents/ guardians submit current information regarding home and work phone numbers and names and phone numbers of a person to contact if parents cannot be reached regarding student illness or injury. Parents/guardians should also inform the school nurse of any changes in a student's health status which occur during the school year.

Medication: The complete medication policy and medication permission forms are mailed to parents/guardians before the beginning of the school year. If it is absolutely necessary for the student to take medication during school hours, the following policy applies. Prescription medication must be submitted to and taken in the health room.

  1. Medication must be in the original labeled container stating the name of the student, name of the medication, amount, time to be taken, presciber's name and current date.
  2. The parent/guardian must provide a written request that the school complies with the physician's order to give the medication.
  3. The authorized prescriber must provide a written request for changes in dosage or discontinuing medication.
  4. It is the student's responsibility to come to the health room at the proper time to take the medication.
Vaccination, Screening, and Immunization: Students, parents or guardians may be subject to penalty for violation of regulation concerning vaccination and immunization. (Reference 44-29-50) Any person who shall fail, neglect, or refuse to comply with any regulation of the Department of Health and Environmental Control relating to vaccination, screening or immunization shall be deemed guilty of a misdemeanor and upon conviction shall be fined not more than one hundred dollars or be imprisoned for not more than thirty days.

Student Parking Lot

Parking permits are available for a $5.00 fee. Parking spots are available for 11th and 12th grade students on the West campus and underclassmen on the East campus. Students are to drive their vehicles in a responsible manner entering and exiting school lots. Failure to purchase a permit, to display appropriately in the car and to park in authorized places may result in loss of parking privileges and other disciplinary actions. Parking permits are not transferable to other students. All vehicles will be subject to routine searches without prior notice. The student parking lots are closed during the school day and are off limits to the student body.

Textbooks

Textbooks are furnished by the school district. If books are lost, damaged or stolen, the student will be fined to cover the damages. Fees for lost or damaged books must be paid before the end of the academic year. A fee schedule for lost or stolen books may be obtained from the bookkeeper's office.

Trespassing

Kingstree Senior High School maintains a closed campus for the safety and security of all students and staff. Persons who have no legitimate business on campus may be subject to trespassing charges and will be reported to the appropriate law enforcement agencies.

Vending Machines

Soft drink and snack machines are available for use by all students. Students may only purchase items from the machines during the authorized break periods within the confines of the school day. Access to the vending machines may be curtailed by the administration if problems arise concerning litter, tardiness, etc.; no glass containers should be brought on campus or into the building at any time. Students use the machines at their own risk. No refunds are available.

Visitors

Parents, Kingstree Senior High School patrons, and visiting educators are welcome to visit Kingstree Senior High School while classes are in session. Whenever possible, advance notice of such visits would be appreciated. These visitors should report to the principal's office to receive a visitor's pass before going into other parts of the building.
Social visits by outside students are prohibited. Anyone coming on the high school campus to pick up a student for early dismissal or after the regular school day should use the front parking lots where visitor parking is available. All other lots are off limits and are strictly for faculty, staff, and students only.

ACADEMIC GUIDELINES

Beginning with the class of 2001, students are required to earn a total of twenty-four (24) units of credit and are required to carry at least 3 units of credit per semester.

STUDENTS WILL NOT BE ALLOWED TO REPEAT ANY COURSES DURING AN ACADEMIC SCHOOL YEAR. STUDENTS FAILING COURSES WILL HAVE TO REPEAT COURSES IN SUMMER SCHOOL OR ENROLL IN THE EVENING STAR PROGRAM, IF OFFERED. THIS ALSO APPLIES TO SENIORS.

Grading System

Report cards are issued eight (8) times a year at one-quarter intervals. Interim reports, with grades, will be given to all students at the mid-point of each grading period. The following system is used to report grades shown on the report card. If there are any questions regarding grades, please contact the school.

Grading Policy

Starting in the 2000 - 2001 school year, a new grading scale policy will apply to students in South Carolina High Schools. The new scale and guidelines will establish greater consistency across South Carolina Schools.

   A - 93-100
   B - 85-92
   C - 77-84
   D - 70-76
   F - 69-0
   I - Incomplete

Superintendent's Honor Roll: Students with an overall average of 93 or above with no subject grade less than 85 are to be considered on the Superintendent's Honor Roll or students with an overall GPA of 3.3 or above, with no subject grade less than 87 are to be considered on the Superintendent's Honor Roll.

School Honor Roll: All students with an overall average of 85-92 with no subject grade less than 77 are to be considered on the School Honor Roll.

Grade Classification

Freshmen/Ninth Grade - All students who were promoted from the eighth grade at the end of the 1999-01 school year.

Ninth Grade Repeaters - All students who have completed one year of high school, but do not meet the requirements to be sophomores.

Sophomores/Tenth Grade - All students who have completed at least 6 units. The following must be included: 1 English, 1 math.

Interim Reports: Interim reports are sent home at the mid-point of each quarter to indicate if a student is making satisfactory progress toward completing that course. This is done to keep the parents informed of their child's progress and to give the student the opportunity to correct the situation before the close of the grading period. Parents will also receive notice from the school when the student is in danger of failing due to excessive absences.

Incomplete Grade: Students receiving an "I" grade on their report card have ten (10) days to remove the "I" or the incomplete grade will become an "F".

Grade Questions: Questions regarding grades should be directed to the classroom teacher. If further clarification is necessary, the matter should be referred to the student's guidance counselor.

EVENING STAR PROGRAM

The Evening Star Program, "Second Chance Remedial Program", is designed to offer remediation for students who failed an English or Math course. Evening Star will be offered only to first time 9th graders or first time tenth graders. The objective is to enable students to earn one unit in one course over an eight-week period. A minimum of fifteen (15) students must be registered in order for the class to be offered. The cost for the program is $150.00 per unit.

SUMMER SCHOOL

Summer school will be provided for remediation only. Students who have taken a course and received a grade of "F" or "NC" (no credit) may enroll in a summer school course for credit. Summer school information will be available prior to the end of school.

GUIDELINES FOR STUDENT BEHAVIOR

It is in the best interest of all students to maintain a clean discipline record at Kingstree Senior High School.

Safe Schools Act (1996)

Under the terms of the Safe Schools Act (1996), the Williamsburg County School District is required to do the following with regard to serious violations of the school discipline policy.

1. All serious violations of the school discipline policy (including, but not limited to assault, fighting, possession of a weapon, possession or sale/transfer of alcoholic beverages, drugs, stealing, etc.) must be reported to the appropriate authorities.

2. In addition to transcripts and attendance records, student discipline records will be sent to any district or school to which a student may transfer. In addition, Kingstree Senior High School will receive all discipline records from other schools for students trans- ferring to Kingstree Senior High School.

Students at Kingstree Senior High School are expected to be courteous and well-mannered, respectful of teachers, staff members and each other. Students are responsible for following the general rules and procedures of the school and the specific classroom rules established by the teachers.

Crosswalk: The crosswalk should not be used during class time without permission from an administrator. Any student who violates this policy will be subject to disciplinary action.

Assembly Behavior: Students are to be cooperative in every respect during all assemblies. To be "cooperative," a student is expected to be attentive, courteous and well-mannered.

Bus Behavior: Kingstree Senior High School students are expected to follow the district guidelines for proper student behavior when riding all buses. Parents and/or students may obtain specific information regarding the bus behavior guidelines from the student's grade administrator.

Cafeteria Behavior

1. No jumping in line or holding a place in line is allowed.
2. Students are responsible for returning all items to the tray return area, placing utensils in the proper containers and making sure all trash is deposited in the appropriate containers.
3. There is to be no overcrowding at the tables in the cafeteria.
4. Throwing food in the cafeteria is strictly prohibited.

Failure to observe these rules and regulations will result in disciplinary action being taken.

Study Hall: The study halls at Kingstree Senior High School offer an atmosphere conducive to studying. Students may request a study hall as part of their schedule. Students are expected to (1) be on time and (2) have papers, an organized notebook, and a list of assignments. Each student will be expected to work independently or with a teacher during study hall time.

Academic Assistance Class: The academic assistance class will serve as an enhancement program for those students who require additional assistance with BSAP testing skills. Students in this class will continue their academic work and receive full credit for successfully completed work while being separated from the mainstream of the school environment.

Academic Dishonesty: Cheating, stealing answers, plagiarizing and academic dishonesty in any form, including inappropriate use or misuse of the school's computer network cannot be tolerated in the school environment. The teacher will confiscate all evidence, document the situation, and report it to the grade-level administrator.

Alcohol and Drugs: Possession, use, being under the influence of, or transfer of illegal drugs, counterfeit drugs or drug "look-alikes" and/or alcohol on school property or at any school function is a violation of board policy. Violators of this rule are subject to an automatic 10-day out-of-school suspension. Students may be suspended for a longer period of time or be expelled depending on the circumstances. Parents will be notified of each violation and appropriate cases will be referred to legal authorities.

Beepers, Portable Telephones, Pagers and Other Inappropriate Objects: Students are not to bring portable telephones or other inappropriate items to school. Such items found at school will be confiscated. These items will be turned over to legal authorities. Also, students are discouraged from bringing pagers or beepers to school.

Dress Code: Clothing is generally acceptable for school as long as it does not jeopardize anyone's health or safety, does not disrupt the teaching/learning environment, does not create school disorder, and is not immodest in any respect (e.g., students are to wear shoes or sandals and keep the torso and all undergarments covered. Caps, hats, other head coverings and sunglasses are not to be worn during the school day (7:30 a.m. to 3:00 p.m.). Students may not wear clothing or accessories which display words or images advertising directly or indirectly, alcohol, tobacco, drugs or related products or which promote the use of these products or which are profane, obscene, or sexually suggestive.

Gambling: Gambling on school premises or during school activities is prohibited.

Intimidation/Threatening Behavior/Harassment/Sexual Harassment: Students who threaten, intimidate, or harass another person by word, act or deed are liable for disciplinary action. Threats directed toward school personnel will result in out-of-school suspension up to ten days. Profanity/Obscene Language: Students are expected to be orderly and well-mannered in their conduct at school. The use of profanity and obscene language is strictly prohibited. Consequences can range from a warning to disciplinary action.

Public Display of Affection: Students should refrain from displays of affection while in school. After a warning, students will be subject to disciplinary action.

Passes: Any student in the halls or other areas of campus while classes are in session must have a pass from the staff member responsible for him/her at that time. Students may not be in the parking lots at any time during the school day without a pass. Failure to obtain proper passes will result in serious disciplinary actions.

Restroom Passes: After the first 30 minutes of class, teachers may give passes to the restroom based on their judgment.

Smoking: The Williamsburg County School District is dedicated to establishing and maintaining a safe, comfortable and productive educational and work environment for its students and staff. In view of the serious health risks associated with tobacco smoke for both smokers and non-smokers, the following health policy is adopted. Smoking and/or the use of tobacco products will not be permitted on school district property at any time. The state of South Carolina states that it is unlawful for anyone under the age of 21 to possess or use tobacco products. This includes all areas within 300 feet of school property. In addition to the prohibition on smoking, students should not carry tobacco products or keep them in their lockers.

Tardiness: Students are considered tardy if they are not inside the classroom when the tardy bell begins to ring. The classroom teachers handle all tardies during first block. Students who are tardy after the first block will be sent immediately to Ms. Alford on the East campus and to Ms. Sabb on the West campus.

Truancy: Once a student has reported to school, he/she should not leave school property during the school day without first obtaining permission from the grade-level administrator. Students who leave the school property without proper authorization from a school official, fail to report to a regularly scheduled class during the school day or do not report to school at all on a school day without parental knowledge and/or permission for the absence are considered truant, therefore, subjecting themselves to appropriate disciplinary action.

FIELD TRIPS: Instructional field trips are those which are directly related to ongoing classroom instruction. They provide a means for staff and students to relate the instructional program to the community outside the schools.

If a student has not paid his/her instructional fee or owes a debt, he/she will not be allowed to attend any school-sponsored field trips. Absolutely no refunds will be given when a child pays to go on a field trip. Once the deposit has been mailed, students will not be allowed to trade places with other students. There will be no exceptions! ALL MONIES FOR OVERNIGHT FIELD TRIPS (SPRING BREAK) MUST BE COLLECTED BY JANUARY 30, 2002. SECURITY DEPOSITS WILL BE MADE AFTER ALL MONIES HAVE BEEN COLLECTED.

If a student has more than three (3) write-ups, he/she will not be allowed to attend any field trips.

If a student is on suspension during the time he/she is scheduled to go on a field trip, that student will not be allowed to go and there will be no refund. No exceptions. All fees are non-refundable. (No exceptions!)

DISCIPLINARY ACTION

Detention: Any member of the faculty may keep students after school for a teacher detention or lunch detention. This is for those students with academic problems as well as those with undesirable patterns of behavior. Students will be given 24 hours notice to report to a teacher detention. Failure to attend a detention will result in the student's assignment to In-School-Suspension (ISS).

Out-of-School Suspension (OSS): OSS is viewed as severe actions which deny the student the privilege of attending school for the number of days specified. School administrators may suspend a student on a short-term basis (1 to 10 school days); the superintendent may suspend a student on a long-term basis (11 to 180 school days). All extracurricular activities are also suspended. Any student who visits the school or attends extracurricular activities while under suspension will be subject to further disciplinary action. Students are encouraged to remain current with class assignments and make up any work missed while under OSS.
